TENNESSEE WILLIAMS’ TWO-CHARACTER PLAY TOUR AT SELECT VENUES ACROSS GREECE 2026

Following the exceptionally warm reception from audiences and critics, the masterpiece “The Two-Character Play” by the legendary American playwright Tennessee Williams, directed by Nana Papadaki, continues its successful run and is being presented, under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy of the United States of America, at select venues across Greece.

After completing its first impressive run of performances in Athens, the production is traveling to Crete, Patras, Thessaloniki, with Vaggelis Papadakis and Nana Papadaki embodying the electrifying leading duo and coming together in a revelatory theatrical palimpsest.

This is a unique opportunity for Greek audiences to enjoy a rare treasure by the popular playwright Tennessee Williams, who described «Two-Character Play» as the «cry of his heart» and as his best work since «A Streetcar Named Desire.»

Tennessee Williams has left an indelible mark on world theater with the rare sensitivity and poetic inspiration of his dramaturgy and characters, and has been honored with two Pulitzer Prizes, one Tony Award, and four New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards.

Plot Summary

The plot of the play unfolds in an unnamed city. Two siblings, Felice and Claire Devoto, have arrived there while touring with their theater troupe. In an empty theater, with no audience, and with their troupe having abandoned them, they are called upon to bring to life a play that seems to be their own lives.

About the play

In Tennessee Williams’s “Two-Character Play” we meet Samuel Beckett, John Cassavetes’s “Opening Night,” Luigi Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author,” «The Song of Solomon,» and even «Plato’s Cave» in a play that navigates the boundaries between fantasy and reality, between confinement and transcendence, and explores the theater’s role as a mirror of our individual and collective consciousness.

The play was rewritten many times by the author between 1966 and 1975 and has also been staged in various versions around the world. The troupe presents the version approved by the author himself and included in the collected volume of all his works.

About the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy of the United States

The performance is presented under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy of the United States and is already generating interest in the U.S. The Hellenic Institute of the United States of America, chaired by DeeGee Lester, is in the early stages of discussions to organize a tour of various U.S. cities next spring, which will coincide with the events celebrating Tennessee Williams’s birthday.

Tennessee Williams: The masterpiece he “kept hidden” for years, at the Roes Theater

Tennessee Williams’s masterpiece is presented at the Roes Theater, directed by Nana Papadaki, under the auspices of HICD-USA, for ten unique performances starting in February 2026.

Tennessee Williams’s best play after “A Streetcar Named Desire,” as he himself described “The Two-Character Play,” is being presented in Greece, under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy of the United States of America, directed by Nana Papadaki, at the Roes Theater, with a scheduled premiere in February 2026.

Vaggelis Papadakis and Nana Papadaki star in Tennessee Williams’ most unusual and revealing play, written for two characters who come together in a unique theatrical palimpsest.

The Two-Character Play

This is a rare gem by the great American playwright—winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, four New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, and a Tony Award—set in an unknown town. Brother and sister, Felice and Claire Devoto, have arrived there while touring with their theater troupe. In an empty theater, with no audience, and with their troupe having abandoned them, they are called upon to bring to life a play that seems to be their own life.

In “The Two-Character Play” we meet Samuel Beckett, John Cassavetes’ “Opening Night,” Luigi Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author,” “The Song of Solomon,” and even “Plato’s Cave,” in a play that straddles the line between fantasy and reality, between confinement and transcendence, exploring the theater’s role as a mirror of our individual and collective consciousness.

The play was rewritten many times by the author from 1966 to 1975 and has also been staged in various versions around the world. The troupe presents the version approved by the author himself and included in the collected volume of all his works.

The performance is presented under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy of the United States of America.

The Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy of the United States of America, HICD – USA (Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy – USA), chaired by DeeGee Lester, is headquartered in Nashville, the capital of the state of Tennessee, where the majority of Williams’ literary estate is housed and where the father of the great American writer was born—a man who would later baptize him, changing his real name from Thomas Lanier to Tennessee.

Permission for the stage production of the play was granted by the Greek company The Artrights, on behalf of The University of South, Sewanee, Tennessee and International Literary Properties, the copyright holders of Tennessee Williams’ works, and on behalf of their agent Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Limited, based in London.

The production belongs to the non-profit company «Maldoror» operating under the artistic direction of actress, director, and writer Nana Papadaki. This is the company’s eighth theatrical production who is preparing for its next trip to Lima to participate in the International Biennial of Peru. The company has presented theatrical performances in Athens, Elefsina, Skiathos, and Brussels, as well as an audiovisual production that has been presented in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Malta, Mexico, Brazil, Bulgaria, India, Germany, and Thailand, and has won eight international awards.

The rare “Two-Character Play” will be staged for ten unique performances at the Roes Theater (16 Iakhou Street, Gazi), with a scheduled premiere in February 2026, consisting of selected Sunday matinee performances interspersed with additional evening shows.

The production is already generating interest in the United States, and the Hellenic Institute of the United States is exploring the possibility of future performances in Nashville, in Sewanee, Tennessee—home to the Tennessee Williams Center—as well as in New Orleans, the author’s favorite city.

Online ticket presales for all available performance dates and times will open soon.

To Έργο δύο προσώπων

Η άδεια για την από σκηνής παρουσίαση του έργου χορηγήθηκε από την ελληνική εταιρία The Artrights, για λογαριασμό του Τhe University of South, Sewannee, Tennessee και του International Literary Properties, δικαιούχων των πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων του Tennessee Williams και για λογαριασμό του ατζέντη αυτών Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Limited, με έδρα στο Λονδίνο.

INTERVIEW ABOUT THE MULTI-AWARDED FILM PRIMORDIAL

Who is Nana Papadaki?

I am an artist working across acting, theatre and film directing, and poetry, based in Greece. My work as an actress includes collaborations with major cultural institutions such as the National Theatre of Greece, the Greek Art Theatre Karolos Koun, the National Theatre of Northern Greece, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, and many others, encompassing  total participation in more than thirty theatre productions, including many leading parts. My directorial portfolio comprises four stage productions, most recently Tennessee Williams’ Two-Character Play, presented under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy—USA and currently touring Greece. My literary work includes four published poetry books. Among these, Encore—Women of Odyssey engages with the female figures of Homer’s Odyssey through a contemporary poetic lens, while Primordial provided the conceptual and textual basis for the multi award-winning poetic film Primordial. In addition to my artistic practice, I am the founder of the artistic company Maldoror focusing, among other, on international cooperation and development and on the promotion of work that foregrounds women’s identity and creativity.

Do you remember the exact moment you fell in love with cinema?

When I saw Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon and the legendary film Evdokia by the Greek director and actor Alexis Damianos, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in person, and who played a role in my decision to pursue theater, since during a recording session he pushed me to a level I hadn’t known I was capable of reaching. I think that in every area of my life, I’m drawn to creations made by people who dare to go against the grain.

Tell us about your project “Primordial”.

Primordial is a poetry/experimental film set in a wasteland, featuring an enigmatic woman—who could be an idea, history, or simply a human being of our times—who comes face to face with an end. The film is based on my book Primordial (Archegoni), which consists of poetic fragments and is inspired, among other, by Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the obscure Sykorax. I am interested in women as bearers of inner power and spiritual birth. The film Primordial, which we co-directed with George Zorbas, has participated in thirty international festivals in Greece, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Malta, Serbia, Bulgaria, India, Belgium, the Netherlands, Thailand, Malta, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, the United States of America, and other, and has won ten honorable mentions and international awards.

Which Director inspires you the most?

Werner Herzog, because he works across different film genres, has made some much-loved films, such as Where the Green Ants DreamWoyzeckStroszekThe Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, and amazing documentaries, and has never compromised. Alejandro Jodorowsky, with his dazzling, poetic cinema, is truly admirable; lately, I’ve also been discovering many experimental films that I greatly enjoy watching and marveling at how they were created under the conditions of their time. And I’ve also discovered a female director I didn’t know about, and I’m going to start studying, Sarah Maldoror, the mother of African cinema.

What do you dislike about the world and what would you change?

The lack of imagination and complete subservience to money. Generations of one-dimensional people are contributing to the perpetuation of the same suffocating environment that knows only how to profit from destruction. I wish we could believe in the good that lies within people.

How do you imagine cinema in 100 years?

Divided, just like our world. On the one hand, the majority of films lack imagination, packed with technology and following the same old formula; and on the other, films that explore, that center on the human being as a living entity, and that speak not to consumers, but to human beings with a soul.

What is your impression of WILD FILMMAKER?

A fresh perspective on the world of cinema and an international creative community that celebrates diversity and authenticity.
