Maldoror is a non-profit company based in Greece, operating under the artistic direction of Nana Papadaki. Through theatre productions, film projects, poetry, writing, and interdisciplinary collaborations, it explores female identity and human experience, cultural memory and Greek literary heritage, and the dialogue between artistic forms and outward orientation.
About the name Maldoror
The name Maldoror is inspired by Les Chants de Maldoror by Comte de Lautréamont, a foundational text that has influenced major artists and artistic movements. For us, the name does not function as a reference to its literary origin alone, but as an indication of a broader artistic orientation, exploration, and practice.
In this sense, “Maldoror” becomes a working field—a space where performance and artistic creation are understood as transformation, intensity, and continuous redefinition. It is an invitation to remain open to imagination, dialogue, and the unexpected paths that art can reveal.
Three axes of Maldoror
The artistic identity of Maldoror is structured around three interconnected axes that define its research field, creative methodology and international orientation. These axes do not function as separate thematic categories, but as overlapping layers through which each work is developed and reconfigured.
- Female identity and human experience
A central axis of Maldoror’s artistic practice is the exploration of female identity and, more broadly, of human experience as a field of embodiment, perception and existential inquiry. Across different works, female figures emerge as sites of interiority and transformation, where identity is continuously constructed, fragmented and redefined through performance.
- Cultural memory and Greek writing
Maldoror approaches Greek heritage and literature it as a living and evolving material, becoming a contemporary space of meaning rather than historical reference, spanning from ancient drama and myth to modern and contemporary literary production. This axis explores how language carries memory, and how cultural identity can be continuously renegotiated through artistic practice.
- Dialogue between the arts and outward orientation
The third axis defines Maldoror’s interdisciplinary and international artistic orientation across theatre, film, poetry and audiovisual creation, treating these disciplines not as separate fields but as interconnected modes of a unified artistic language. Through this axis, Maldoror positions itself within a broader European and international cultural field, where artistic creation is understood as exchange and continuous reconfiguration across languages, geographies and audiences.

- The Two-Character Play (2026) – A production of Tennessee Williams’ play directed by Nana Papadaki, exploring identity, memory, and the fragile boundaries between life and performance.
- Primordial (2024) – An award-winning poetry film based on Nana Papadaki’s poetry collection of the same name, bringing together poetry, image, performance, and sound in an interdisciplinary cinematic language.
- Timandra (2024) – A contemporary reactivation of Theodor Kallifatides’ overlooked female figure of antiquity, exploring memory, desire, aging and female agency.
- Niki, Tonight at the Party (2022) – A performance dedicated to Niki Triantafyllidi, bringing into dialogue the artistic voices of Niki Triantafyllidi, Roula Pateraki, and Nana Papadaki, while exploring female authorship, cultural memory, and artistic continuity.
- Tribute to Yannis Ritsos – 110 years since his birth (2019) – A multidisciplinary cycle dedicated to Yannis Ritsos, activating Greek poetic heritage through performance and artistic dialogue.
- Beneath the Shadow of the Mountain (2018–2026) – A long-term performance project based on Yannis Ritsos’ poetry, transforming text into embodied language while exploring memory and cultural continuity across different contexts.
- Thalassinoi Erotes (2020) – A theatrical work based on Alexandros Papadiamantis, exploring love, longing, and the poetic dimensions of human experience.
- Plato’s Ion – A Small Symposium (2016) – A contemporary staging of Plato’s dialogue, conceived as an encounter between philosophy, theatre, and performance.
Collaborations & International Recognition
Maldoror’s productions have been supported and presented under the auspices of institutions including the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the Swedish Institute at Athens, and the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy – USA.
Its artistic activity has extended beyond Greece to Belgium and Peru, including participation in Peru Bienal (Lima), while collaborations have been developed with organisations such as Galaxia Gutenberg (Spain) and the Hellenic Circle Cultural Association in Brussels (Belgium).
Recent international recognition includes the poetry film Primordial, which has received multiple international awards and official selections across Europe, North and South America, and Asia.
